Thanks for running with us!

The 2nd annual Lake Michigan Credit Union Bridge Run was a resounding success again this year, as 1,815 participants ran and walked in delightful temperatures. 80 LMCU staffers and 251 members turned out to run the picturesque event route that wove through historic neighborhoods and over GR’s iconic downtown bridges.

LMCU’s Board of Directors Chairperson, Gretchen Tellman-Partridge signaled the start to each race/walk and Board member Dave Bardolph was a volunteer with My Team Triumph, which allows those with disabilities to experience an endurance event. Many thanks to all the spirited LMCU members who joined us for this annual celebration of healthy lifestyles!

Dialing up your smartphone’s security

We hope that you’re enjoying the ease and convenience of mobile banking using the LMCU smartphone app. You’ve likely discovered your smartphone is really just a very small, powerful computer that stores account numbers and passwords when you shop or bank online. Such data is a goldmine to identity thieves. Here are some easy tips to help safeguard your smartphone’s vital data:

Use your phone's password lock feature. You’ll want to make sure that this feature is active. If your smartphone is ever lost or stolen, this is your first line of defense.

Avoid storing passwords for online accounts. “Auto-fill” is very convenient, but turn it off. If your phone is stolen, thieves will have easy access to your sensitive data.

Scrutinize your wi-fi connections. Using unfamiliar wi-fi networks can leave you vulnerable. Disconnect from wi-fi when you’re not using it.

Update your software. Make sure you’re using the latest versions. Updates include security fixes and patches to address known vulnerabilities.

Use care in downloading new apps. Many free apps often contain hidden malware, spyware or other unscrupulous programs. Research new apps by checking consumer reviews.

Take advantage of mobile security apps. Many apps are available to fight spam, malware, spyware, viruses, worms and data theft. Check with your mobile phone provider for more information.

Backup your data. This simple measure allows you to retrieve data should your phone ever become lost, stolen or damaged.

Disposal of your mobile phone. When it’s time to retire your current phone, permanently  erase all data and remove the SIM card.

Anyone can open an account at LMCU!

So tell your family and friends! You know about the benefits of being a LMCU member, but they might not. There’s a common misperception out there that becoming a LMCU member means having to be part of some specialized group. Not true! LMCU membership is open to anyone who lives, works or worships in the lower peninsula of the State of Michigan. If you’re not a resident of Michigan, you can also become a member by simply making a $5.00 donation to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association of Michigan.

Opening any account—savings, checking, credit card, mortgage, personal loan or insurance policy—makes that person a member. So spread the word!

80 Years of LMCU!

It all started in October of 1933. Originally known as the Grand Rapids Teachers Credit Union, LMCU has become the largest locally-headquartered financial institution in West Michigan. Obviously, we could never have done it without your support, and that of over 270,000 of your fellow members.

And we’re celebrating! Starting October 1 until October 31, 2013, you can enter to win $500 by visiting our home page at lmcu.org or any branch location.

Commercial Banking Spotlight: Southland Auto Wash shines

Southland Auto Wash has been keeping rides clean and buffed since the days of tail-fins, big chrome and whitewalls. From their original downtown location at the corner of Sheldon and Oakes, the Ellis family has held on to that tradition, and grown to five Grand Rapids area locations, employing 60 workers. Mark Ellis, son of original owner Ernest Ellis, now runs the family business and has overseen its growth since the 80s. Mark’s son, Sean Ellis, represents this family’s third generation in the business, and serves as Vice President and Operations Manager.

In the car wash business, growth requires sizable financial backing. Since 2011, Lake Michigan Credit Union has partnered with Southland Auto Wash to help keep this iconic business on an upward financial trajectory.

Further growth is just ahead. LMCU’s Vice President of Commercial Lending, Jim Maskell, has a 15-year history with Southland Auto Wash. “LMCU is providing financing to acquire a commercial property on Kalamazoo Avenue in Kentwood. Set for opening in January of 2014, this will be a 6,700 square foot tunnel car wash, and the company’s sixth location in the greater Grand Rapids area. We also provide a full range of credit and depository services for day-to-day operations.”

For Ellis, people make the difference. His long association with Jim Maskell led him to consider Lake Michigan Credit Union as a finance partner. “Jim is a very special commercial banker. He truly understands my business. He’s very good at walking in my shoes and recognizing our unique banking needs. The entire LMCU commercial banking team has demonstrated high levels of interest, involvement and understanding. LMCU truly listens, and responds to the unique challenges of business lending.”

Ellis also appreciates the power of intangibles. “None of us enter into business relationships looking for personal friendships, but there seems to be a very natural camaraderie in our partnership that makes working with LMCU such a pleasure. This is nothing like a typical client-vendor relationship, and it’s altogether different than dealing with a traditional bank. That’s a good thing.”

The best place for your career!

Lake Michigan Credit Union is growing. We’re already West Michigan’s largest locally- headquartered financial institution, but we still have numerous positions to fill as we prepare to open several new branch offices.

From tellers, call center operators and administrative personnel to mortgage loan officers, insurance reps and Auto Center staffing, LMCU is a place of growth and opportunity! Check out our current employment openings at lmcu.org/careers.

Cleaning house: Making the most of your 401(k) retirement investments

Most people typically change jobs a number of times during their careers. They often accumulate a number of 401(k) accounts, created as part of employee benefit packages. At the time, those accounts were set up based on investment goals of the day. But investment strategies need to change over time, to better reflect the accumulation of funds, vulnerability to market swings and tolerance for risk. If you have a number of 401(k) accounts from previous employers, chances are they are stagnating and no longer in tune with your current goals. That means your money isn’t working as hard, or as smartly, as it could.

Consolidation of multiple 401(k) accounts is like a thorough house cleaning for your retirement plans. Lake Michigan Investment Services advisors can help get your financial house in order.

Benefits include:
  • Less paperwork
  • Easier monitoring of investments
  • More investment choices
  • Asset allocation,* guidance and monitoring
Call Lake Michigan Investment Services today for guidance in developing and implementing a retirement investment strategy tailored to your objectives. To schedule an advisor appointment, contact Susan Opper at (616) 234-6301, ext 6301, or Ashley Lanting at (616) 234-6358, ext 6358.

Thank you for supporting the One Pencil Project!

Once again, LMCU members are helping to fill donation bins at our branch locations with supplies that teachers would otherwise dip into their own pockets to provide. Last year, our donation sites collected enough supplies to help over 350 teachers in 50 area school districts. This year, we’re hoping to top those totals by the time this effort ends on September 13. Thank you for your generous support!

Your opinion counts!

LMCU celebrates 80 years!

In October of 1933, Grand Rapids educator Lloyd F. Hutt opened his home as the first branch office of the Grand Rapids Teachers Credit Union. Eighty years later, Hutt would scarcely recognize the expansion of his home-grown company. Next month, we’ll be celebrating Hutt’s vision and dedication. And we’ll be reveling in how you, and over 267,000 of your fellow members, have made all of this possible. Watch for coming announcements about events, celebrations and how you can enter to win $500!
